Nnamdi Kanu: Nigerian Court Warns DSS Director Bichi Of Consequences For Disobeying Order, Risk Of Jail Incarceration

The legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has taken action against the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Yusuf Magai Bichi, for failing to comply with a court orders.

The lawyers have accused the SSS Director General, also known as the Department of State Services (DSS), of openly disregarding a court order from the Federal High Court. This order required the SSS to provide a room for Kanu’s legal team to prepare for his defense in Charge No: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015.

On May 20, Justice B.F.M. Nyako denied Kanu’s bail application and his request to be moved to a Nigerian Custodial Centre. Instead, the court ordered the SSS to provide a room for Kanu to prepare for his defense, limiting his legal team to five members.

The court specified that Kanu should have access to the room three days a week and that his legal team should be allowed to take notes and have the necessary facilities for defense preparation.

In a Form 48 Notice of Consequences of Disobedience to the court order, the court warned Bichi that he could face imprisonment if found guilty of contempt of court.

The notice filed on May 31, 2024, read: “TAKE NOTICE that unless you obey the directives contained in this Order overleaf (by complying with the directives contained at paragraphs 2 & 3 of the said order), you will be guilty of contempt of Court and will be liable to be committed to prison.”
